How Does a Chemical Peel Work?

Chemical peels work by using acids or enzymes to break down the “glue” holding together dead skin cells on the surface of your skin. This controlled exfoliation:

Across all depths: avoid picking or scratching healing skin, apply moisturizer and sunscreen as directed, and avoid saunas, steam rooms, and hot showers until fully healed — this reduces the risk of irritation, infection, and abnormal pigmentation.


Side Effects and Risks

Most side effects are mild and temporary — redness, dryness, stinging, and flaking are expected as part of healing. Less common but possible risks include:

Who Should Avoid Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels and lasers both resurface the skin, but through different mechanisms:

  • Chemical peels use acids to exfoliate the outer skin layers — effective and non-invasive for superficial concerns like mild acne, uneven tone, and early pigmentation.
  • Laser treatments (such as fractional CO2 or pico lasers) use focused light energy to resurface skin and stimulate collagen at deeper levels, often delivering more dramatic results for deeper scars and wrinkles.

Some people benefit from combining both — alternating chemical peels with laser sessions as part of a broader skin treatment plan, tailored to their specific concerns and downtime tolerance.
